Start freeA newer program, so the documents matter more
LA GATOR is Louisiana's scholarship program for families who want to direct education funding themselves, and it is run by the Louisiana Department of Education. Newer programs have a particular feature that is easy to miss: there is less folk knowledge around them. Parent groups are still working out the answers, and confident guesses spread quickly.
That makes the program's own documents more important, not less. The Department publishes a main page for the program and a separate policy page, and the policy page is the one that reads like a rulebook. If you only read one thing, make it that, and read it before you spend.
If the whole category is new to you, our plain-English explainer covers how these programs are shaped: What Is an ESA? A Plain-English Guide for Parents.
The platform is not the program
Louisiana families use an outside platform to manage the account. That is normal, and the platform's support staff are useful for getting things done in it. They are not the people who decide what the program covers.
The distinction matters most in the gray areas. A support article that sounds confident is still a platform's reading, written for a general audience. Anything that would be expensive to get wrong goes to the Department, in writing, with the reply saved next to the receipt.
What tends to trip families up
Assuming a purchase that went through is a purchase that counts. A transaction can succeed and still be questioned later. Keep the paper trail whether or not anyone has asked for it yet.
Mixed carts. An order with school items and non-school items needs the receipt kept whole, with a note on which lines were for the program. Our piece on what to do when a purchase is questioned is here: What Happens If an ESA Purchase Gets Rejected.
Reading an old copy. A policy changes, and a PDF someone forwarded last year may not match what the Department publishes today. Go to the source and look at the date.
Where to get the real answers

LA GATOR Scholarship Program Policy
Who qualifies, how to apply, award levels, timing and what the funds may be used for are the Department's to answer, and this page repeats none of them. We would rather send you to the current source than hand you a number that could be out of date.
How CheckFirst ESA helps
CheckFirst ESA is an organizing tool for the paperwork side: a place for receipts, a note on each purchase, what you have submitted, and a reminder before something is due, separately for each child.
It does not decide anything and it does not speak for Louisiana. CheckFirst ESA does not decide; your program administrator does. It will not tell you a purchase is fine, and where something is unclear it points you to your program, before you buy.

Common questions
- Which LA GATOR page tells me how the funds may be used?
- The Louisiana Department of Education publishes a policy page for the program in addition to its main program page, and the policy is where the rules about using the funds are written down. Read the policy itself, not a summary of it, and look at the date on it. If it does not answer your question, ask the Department in writing.
- Can the company running the payment platform tell me whether a purchase counts?
- It can tell you how the platform works. Whether a purchase counts is the program's decision, and a help-desk article is not the program. If the platform's help center and the Department's policy ever seem to say different things, go with the Department and ask it to confirm.
- Does CheckFirst ESA decide whether a LA GATOR purchase is allowed?
- No. CheckFirst ESA does not decide; your program administrator does. We keep your receipts, notes and deadlines together so you can answer the program quickly. If something looks uncertain, we say to check with your program before you buy.
- What is the easiest record-keeping habit to start with?
- Photograph or download the itemized receipt the same day, and add a single line about what the purchase was for and which child it was for. Doing it at the time of purchase takes seconds; doing it later means digging through email and card statements.
